26: Extending and Receiving Forgiveness

You long to be free. And yet in those places where you have not forgiven others, or have not received God’s gracious mercy, you remain stuck. You rehearse blame. You feel unworthy. Beloved, your fear that forgiving will condone the wrongs of others is natural. So is your fear that the forgiveness extended to you—divine or human—will not be effective. Yet as you choose to release the sins God has forgiven, both yours and others’, you are being set free. You will not, and need not, forget the wrongs done to you, or those you have committed, but they will no longer exercise power over you. As you give and receive forgiveness, you are being set free.
