22: Trusting a Faithful Parent

The faces and voices of your earliest caregivers, both those who were present and those who were absent, prefigured what you expected of a divine other. This is natural. Yet every parent, in varying degrees, will fail. In God’s face, you receive the exuberant and unconditional welcome you did not receive from human faces. You hear a voice that is calm, gracious, and kind. You taste what’s available to you now: perfect steadfast love for which you were made. You are being transformed as reality penetrates your deep places. As a loving mother holds and nurtures her child, God is with you. As a good father protects and empowers his child, God is for you. What you most need is available to you now. God is the faithful parent who does not fail.
