17: Honoring Your Feelings

Your feelings are real, but they are not reality. Their job is to signal something that is worth noticing. Resisting your feelings gives them power. When you resist a feeling—sadness, anger, or fear—it will stay, whether it’s silently buried in your deep places or pulsing palpably in your body. In the moments when you are undone, the deceiver hisses that your feelings will overwhelm you. Or he convinces you that you cannot bear to face them. But this is a lie. As you decide to allow your feelings, you are discovering that you are able to bear them and learn what they have to teach you. As you allow your feelings, and release them, you dispel their power to undo you.
